Karina Goluba, researcher from the University of Latvia, completed a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) at the Barcelona Stem Cell Bank, Regenerative Medicine Program of the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), within the framework of the HAPLO-iPS COST Action (CA21151).
The mission focused on advanced training in the reprogramming of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). During the two-week visit, Karina gained experience in the complete iPSC generation workflow, beginning with PBMC isolation and cryopreservation protocols, followed by cell reprogramming using the Sendai virus system. She also learned essential techniques for assessing colony morphology, colony picking, routine iPSC maintenance, and strategies to recognize and prevent spontaneous differentiation during cell culture.
The expertise acquired during the STSM will be directly implemented in future research projects at the University of Latvia. As a follow-up activity, the research team plans to establish iPSC culture capabilities by introducing the protocols learned during the training and acquiring the necessary equipment and reagents.
