Gerald Schumann

WG4 Leader
Prof. Schumann deals with the mobilization of endogenous transposable elements (TEs) including LINE-1s, Alus and SVAs, in human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells), which poses a risk for genomic integrity and safety of hPSCs and their derivatives that are to be used for cell- and/or gene therapy. Research in his laboratory addresses i) the consequences of pluripotent state-triggered activation and mobilization of endogenous TEs for genomic stability, ii) epigenetic regulation of activity and mobilization of endogenous TEs, and host factors involved in the regulation of TE activity in hPSCs.
